Matthew 9

“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”— Matthew 9:36

Matthew 9 is filled with action—Jesus heals the paralyzed, restores sight to the blind, raises a girl from the dead, and forgives sins. Yet what stands out most is His heart. When Jesus looked at the crowds, He didn’t see a nuisance or a burden; He saw people who were lost, weary, and hurting. His heart was moved with compassion.

The Greek word for “compassion” here describes a deep, gut-level mercy—love that moves to action. That’s the heart of our Savior. He sees us in our helplessness and does not turn away. He steps in to heal, forgive, and restore. He is the Shepherd who seeks His sheep and lays down His life for them.

At the end of the chapter, Jesus calls His followers: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” The same compassion that filled His heart now fills ours as we share His love with others. Wherever He has placed you—home, work, community—you are part of His harvest work.

Questions for Reflection

  • Where do you see people around you who are “harassed and helpless”?

  • How can Christ’s compassion move you to respond with love and prayer?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are our Shepherd and our Savior. Open our eyes to the people around us who need Your mercy. Use us as workers in Your harvest, that others may know the hope and healing found only in You. Amen.
