Matthew 5 begins Jesus' most well known teaching, commonly known as "The Sermon on the Mount." He begins his teaching with words that are both comforting and challenging. Jesus teaches us how to live in light of the Gospel—how to reflect His grace, mercy, and truth in our relationships, decisions, and daily walk.
When Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world,” He’s not giving us a task to earn His favor. He’s declaring who we already are in Him. Through Baptism and faith, we are united with Christ. We are forgiven, redeemed, and set apart to be His witnesses.
Salt preserves and flavors—we are called to preserve the truth of God’s Word and bring the flavor of grace into a world that desperately needs it.
Light reveals and g
uides—we shine with the light of Christ, pointing others to the hope and salvation found in Him.
In Matthew 5, Jesus teaches us how life works best—not as a burdensome law, but as a gracious invitation to live in harmony with God’s will. He addresses anger, reconciliation, purity, and love for enemies. These teachings are not just ideals; they are practical ways to live out our faith.
