Matthew 2

The Christmas song says, “We three kings of orient are …” But they weren’t kings, they were astrologers or sages or wisemen from the east—probably Persia, not the orient. And the Bible doesn’t tell us there were three but as it does identify three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh, it makes sense to assume each wiseman brought a gift. Three foreigners come to worship the new born king, while the people in and around Jerusalem don’t even realize the King has been born. How sad it is that when King Herod does find out about the birth of Jesus, he wants to destroy Him. Kill the hope of the world. But God intervenes and rescues baby Jesus, Joseph and Mary.

• The wisemen followed a star to Jesus. How did you find Jesus? What’s your spiritual story?

• Herod tried to kill Jesus because he saw Him as a threat. Do you ever find Jesus threatening? Why?
